- A state study concluded that development of a trail along the Saugus rail
line from Everett, through Malden, Revere, and Saugus to Lynn is feasible.
- All five communities have endorsed the development of the trail. Local state
representatives and senators have also endorsed the trail effort.
- Bike to the Sea members Patricia DeLauri and Herman Zinter developed a conceptual
trail design and cost estimate.
- Congressman Ed Marky has secured $1.3 million in federal funds for construction.
- Bike to the Sea funded an aerial survey of the entire right-of-way with
the support from the Cities of Everett, Malden and Revere and the Department
of Environmental Management.
- The design of the first three miles of the trail in Everett and Malden is
underway with support from MassHighway.
- The MBTA has adopted a policy that will transfer surplus rights of way to
local communities. An MBTA decision on whether to surplus the Saugus Branch
will be made within this year.
- The Cities of Everett, Malden, Revere and Lynn have requested that the MBTA
give the Cities permission to develop the trail.
